Released in August 1985, the 1985 Dietary Guidelines for Americans featured recommendations developed and released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (HHS). It remained the Federal guidance until the 1990 Dietary Guidelines was released.

Advisory Committee Report

In 1983, a Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee was established in accordance with a condition from the Senate Appropriations Committee. The nine-member Committee, specializing in the field of human nutrition, was responsible for reviewing the scientific literature affecting dietary guidance for the public, reviewing public comments on the Dietary Guidelines consumer bulletin, and making recommendations to the Secretaries of both Departments for updating the 

Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The Committee held its first of four public meetings on July 20-21, 1983. The Committee then submitted its scientific report to the Secretaries in April 1985.
